What Are Executive Functions and Executive Function Skills?

Executive functions refer to the brain’s ability to control communication between various areas of the brain.

They manage how we organize, plan, adjust, get started and carry out tasks in life.

These skills affect outcomes for all of us, and are a bigger factor in success and achievement than intelligence.

We use these skills to direct actions towards a goal.  Once we define the goal, we can figure out HOW to get there.  Executive function skills help us to do this so we can complete tasks and find success; this applies across all areas of life including academic, athletic, and social-emotional.

What do Executive Function Skills affect?

They affect how we…

  • Retrieve and process learned information
  • Synthesize, pull together, or connect ideas
  • Break down, initiate and execute tasks
  • Plan, organize, and manage our time
  • Sustain attention
  • Self regulate
  • Adapt to change
  • Problem solve
  • Control our social-emotional and behavioral well being
What are academic signs of possible Executive Function skills deficiencies?
  • Difficulty with a specific subject or just school work in general
  • Unable to organize school materials, bedroom or belongings
  • Difficulty understanding assignments or what is expected
  • Unable to pay attention, stay focused or sit still
  • Takes longer to complete tasks than necessary
  • Poor attention to detail
  • Trouble starting tasks and transitioning to new ones
  • Difficulty seeing how information fits together or breaking it into smaller pieces
  • Surprised when grades aren’t as good as expected
  • Disappointed that grades don’t reflect what is known or understood
  • Loses important assignments and forgets to turn things in
  • Speaks well, has great ideas and is inherently bright but this does not show in school work and grades
What are personal signs of possible Executive Function skills deficiencies?
  • Appears lazy, unmotivated, confused, disorganized, or unproductive
  • Impulsive and acts without considering future consequences
  • Rigidity which often triggers anxiety
  • Low self esteem and easily frustrated
  • Difficulty learning from past experience and applying to the future
  • Difficulty solving problems and trying new strategies
  • Difficulty managing/estimating times and often late
  • Apparent behavioral/emotional management issues: seeks immediate gratification, overreacts, overly emotional, unenthusiastic, unable to pick self up, or fluctuates between highs and lows
  • Provides automated responses (uh-huh, ok, no) without actually processing
  • Difficulty regulating self or having self awareness/assessment
  • Difficulty interpreting and translating instructions/social cues
  • Random interjection of thoughts (perhaps from previous topic)
Who is a good candidate for your products and services?

Anyone who seeks to develop any area of executive functioning or study skills. Most of us can benefit from suggestions, strategies or tools in some area.

For individual services, step one is to schedule a complimentary 15 minute phone conversation. You can schedule this call here:   https://calendly.com/efs/15min

Please be sure when you schedule your call that you share with us some details about the type of support you are interested in as well as a few details about your student.

After this conversation, the next step is to set up the initial consultation appointment (approx. 1 – 1.25hrs in length).

How long before we can expect to see improvements?

We wish there was an easy answer to this question. The rate of progress depends on a multitude of factors including age, coexisting diagnoses or concerns, maturity, consistency, success of implementing tools and strategies, frequency of appointments, and motivation/willingness to try new approaches. We have seen some students progress significantly after a few sessions, while others need consistent and ongoing support for years.

What is your refund policy for coaching plans/services?

Our coaching plans are designed to provide comprehensive support as students learn to develop, internalize and apply key executive functioning skills.  Plans are selected by families based on needs and goals of each individual client.

Should you need to request a refund, our policy is that refunds will be processed (minus a 6% processing and administrative fee) after scheduling and completing either a wrap up appointment/session or requesting to receive a summary report of recommendations and priorities for the client to ensure they are set up for success after terminating services. This time will be drawn from the remaining minutes in the plan and generally will be logged as a 45 minute session. We will let you know if we anticipate needing more time than this estimate. The remaining amount of minutes in the plan will be prorated and refunded.  Fees above are based on original coaching plan fee and will be deducted from the total amount after prorating. Please allow 3-5 days to process the request after completion of report or final session.
